The network for sentinel surveillance for all types and subtypes of influenza viruses circulating among the population of Ukraine is created with the following purposes:

  • Monitoring of circulated viruses, which helps to update influenza vaccines annually, COVID-19 to find out new influenza viruses, which can have a pandemic potential and to carry out the monitoring of resistance to antiviral drugs.
  • Timely detection, investigation and reaction on influenza and COVID-19 outbrakes or other pathogens which can cause a pandemic.
  • To develop an influenza control policy based on information about seasonality, risk groups, and influenza burden.
  • Rapid intervention by healthy services will allow to: prevent, constrain or limit human-to-human transmission of the virus; provide effective medical care to infected persons what will result to mortality reduction; decrease economic and social spending from influenza epidemics and possible pandemic.

As for 2024 the sentinel surveillance network includes 18 sentinel sites in Kyiv, Odessa, Dnipro and Khmelnytskyy, relevant Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
